In honor of National Historic Preservation Month, the City of Helena/Lewis and Clark County Heritage Tourism Council (HTC) has planned a series of proclamations and a historic photo display. The Board of County Commissioners is set to issue a Proclamation at their regular meeting on Tuesday, May 14th at 9:00 AM. The Helena City Commission will follow suit with their own Proclamation on Monday, May 20th at 6:00 PM. Both public meetings will take place in the Commission Chamber, room 330, located on the third floor of the City-County Building.

Throughout May, visitors to the City-County Building can view large photo banners displayed on the first and second floors. These banners highlight Helena’s architectural history from the late 1880s through to the early 1900s.

The first-floor exhibit features images of iconic structures such as the Penn Block and Bristol Hotel, Cosmopolitan Hotel, Beveredge Block, Central Beer Hall, City Hall, Fire and Police Departments, and City Jail. Included in this collection are two street scenes of Main Street: one captured from Wall Street in 1905.

On the second floor, visitors can see images from Main Street looking up Grand Street circa 1908. Also featured are photos of Union Bank and Trust/Merchants National Bank, Montana National Bank, Grand Central Hotel, Holter Hardware, Gans and Kein, and Novelty Block.

For further information regarding these exhibits or any other queries related to Historic Preservation Month activities in Helena/Lewis and Clark County area, please contact Kathy Macefield at kmacefield@lccountymt.gov or call (406) 447-8342.
